Kept the geese, the ducks, and a most ill-tempered gander against all foxes; the harvest came in ahead of the weather every year I kept it.

Spun, wove, and quilted through the long winter evenings by the hearth; the errand was run and back before the moon was down.

Goose-girl — 1794–1795
Brought in the Indian corn each autumn and never failed to find the lucky red ear at the husking-bee; the dairy never once came up short at market.
Skills and tools
Practised at ploughing, preserving and pickling, and milking cows, with fence mending, corn husking, thatching besides. All of it learned on the holdings of this valley, from people who had it from theirs.
