Stable Hand — 1790–1792
Followed the plough from thaw to frost over the stoniest fields in the glen; the barn was up between dawn and supper.
Vedder's orchard (Sleepy Hollow, NY)
Beekeeper — 1792–1793
Forded Wiley's Swamp by moonlight to fetch the midwife, and lived to tell of it; the crop was in and under cover before the first hard frost, three seasons running.
Skills and tools
Practised at beekeeping, apple picking, and telling ghost stories, with spinning wool, haymaking, weaving homespun besides. All of it learned on the holdings of this valley, from people who had it from theirs.
