Brought in the Indian corn each autumn and never failed to find the lucky red ear at the husking-bee; not one child was lost on the road home, in any weather.
Quackenbush's hop-yard (Sleepy Hollow, NY)
Cornhusker — 1784–1787
Smoked the hams, salted the pork, and filled the cellar against the snows; the field was finished on time every season, stones and all.
Skills and tools
Practised at rye-and-Indian bread baking, spinning wool, and psalm singing, with wood splitting besides. All of it learned on the holdings of this valley, from people who had it from theirs.
