Pieter Roosa
Spinner, lately of Couwenhoven's dairy. Up before cock-crow, abed before the Horseman rides.
Experience
A true child of Sleepy Hollow: drowsy, peaceable, and given to trances, visions, and the seeing of marvelous sights.
The Storm farmstead on the millpond (Sleepy Hollow, NY)
Ploughman — 1780–present
Dipped candles, boiled soap, and kept a snug, well-ordered Dutch kitchen; the sleigh got the household to church through every drift of that winter.
Van Tassel Farm (Sleepy Hollow, NY)
Ploughman — 1784–1787
Raised barns at every frolic from Tarry Town to the upper millpond; the errand was run and back before the moon was down.
Hans Van Ripper Homestead (Sleepy Hollow, NY)
Quilter — 1787–1789
Tended the great pumpkin patch and carted the harvest in before the witching nights; not a bird was lost to the fox in four winters.
Skills and tools
Practised at spinning wool, smoking hams, and barn raising, with soap boiling, telling ghost stories, churning butter besides. All of it learned on the holdings of this valley, from people who had it from theirs.
Recorded in the parish register of Sleepy Hollow, autumn of 1799.
