Goodwife — 1781–present
Dipped candles, boiled soap, and kept a snug, well-ordered Dutch kitchen; the harvest came in ahead of the weather every year I kept it.
Vedder's orchard (Sleepy Hollow, NY)
Goose-girl — 1789–1791
Sheared the sheep each spring and carded the wool for the goodwives' wheels; not one child was lost on the road home, in any weather.
Hans Van Ripper Homestead (Sleepy Hollow, NY)
Farmhand — 1792–1794
Rose before cock-crow to milk the herd and churn the morning's butter; the sleigh got the household to church through every drift of that winter.
Skills and tools
Practised at cider pressing, wood splitting, and churning butter, with milking cows, barn raising besides. All of it learned on the holdings of this valley, from people who had it from theirs.
