Dipped candles, boiled soap, and kept a snug, well-ordered Dutch kitchen; the cellar held cider enough to carry the whole household to spring.

Orchard Keeper — 1790–1793
Banked the schoolhouse fire and walked the children home through the haunted wood; the kitchen ran on what the farm made and bought almost nothing.

Skills and tools
Practised at well drawing, churning butter, and fence mending, with barn raising besides. All of it learned on the holdings of this valley, from people who had it from theirs.
