Experience

A true child of Sleepy Hollow: drowsy, peaceable, and given to trances, visions, and the seeing of marvelous sights.

The Suydam holding by the marsh (Sleepy Hollow, NY)

Beekeeper — 1783–present

Sheared the sheep each spring and carded the wool for the goodwives' wheels; the sleigh got the household to church through every drift of that winter.

Couwenhoven's dairy (Sleepy Hollow, NY)

Ploughman — 1790–1792

Banked the schoolhouse fire and walked the children home through the haunted wood; the barn was up between dawn and supper.

Skills and tools

Practised at soap boiling, well drawing, and spinning wool, with barn raising besides. All of it learned on the holdings of this valley, from people who had it from theirs.

Recorded in the parish register of Sleepy Hollow, autumn of 1799.
