Couwenhoven's dairy (Sleepy Hollow, NY)
Orchard Keeper — 1788–present
Drove the sleigh to the Old Dutch Church through every drift of a valley winter; the wool clip sold at the best price in the glen two years together.
The Martling farm (Sleepy Hollow, NY)
Hired Man — 1783–1786
Spun, wove, and quilted through the long winter evenings by the hearth; the household's homespun clothed six through four winters without buying cloth.
Sleepy Hollow Grist Mill (Sleepy Hollow, NY)
Farmhand — 1790–1791
Sheared the sheep each spring and carded the wool for the goodwives' wheels; the cellar held cider enough to carry the whole household to spring.
Skills and tools
Practised at well drawing, beekeeping, and cider pressing, with sleigh driving, milking cows besides. All of it learned on the holdings of this valley, from people who had it from theirs.
