Dipped candles, boiled soap, and kept a snug, well-ordered Dutch kitchen; the taproom's takings rose on every night I worked it.

Cider Presser — 1790–1793
Smoked the hams, salted the pork, and filled the cellar against the snows; the sleigh got the household to church through every drift of that winter.
Skills and tools
Practised at fording Wiley's Swamp, fence mending, and pumpkin cultivation, with tending geese, cider pressing, haymaking besides. All of it learned on the holdings of this valley, from people who had it from theirs.
