Steady, dreamy, and superstitious like all the long-settled Dutch families of the hollow. Keeps to the old ways and the old roads — by daylight.

**Quilter** — 1780–present

Rose before cock-crow to milk the herd and churn the morning's butter; the barn was up between dawn and supper.

**Spinner** — 1783–1786

Sheared the sheep each spring and carded the wool for the goodwives' wheels; the taproom's takings rose on every night I worked it.

#### Skills and tools ##

Practised at preserving and pickling, well drawing, and thatching, with wood splitting, soap boiling, churning butter besides. All of it learned on the holdings of this valley, from people who had it from theirs.
