A quiet, contented soul of the valley, asking little more than a snug farm, a full cellar, and an evening of ghost stories by the fire.

##### Couwenhoven's dairy (Sleepy Hollow, NY)
**Goose-girl** — 1780–present

Followed the plough from thaw to frost over the stoniest fields in the glen; not one child was lost on the road home, in any weather.

##### Wyckoff's sheep-walk (Sleepy Hollow, NY)
**Quilter** — 1784–1785

Sheared the sheep each spring and carded the wool for the goodwives' wheels; the kitchen ran on what the farm made and bought almost nothing.

##### Hans Van Ripper Homestead (Sleepy Hollow, NY)
**Goodwife** — 1789–1792

Pressed the orchard's apples into barrel upon barrel of sweet and hard cider; the household's homespun clothed six through four winters without buying cloth.

#### Skills and tools ##

Practised at corn husking, soap boiling, and preserving and pickling, with horsemanship, wood splitting, beekeeping besides. All of it learned on the holdings of this valley, from people who had it from theirs.
