Born and raised in the secluded glen near Tarry Town and never once tempted by the bustling world beyond its hills.

##### Couwenhoven's dairy (Sleepy Hollow, NY)
**Cider Presser** — 1784–present

Dipped candles, boiled soap, and kept a snug, well-ordered Dutch kitchen; the cellar held cider enough to carry the whole household to spring.

##### The Old Dutch Church glebe (Sleepy Hollow, NY)
**Orchard Keeper** — 1790–1793

Banked the schoolhouse fire and walked the children home through the haunted wood; the kitchen ran on what the farm made and bought almost nothing.

**Dairymaid** — 1787–1790

Dipped candles, boiled soap, and kept a snug, well-ordered Dutch kitchen; the winter stores never ran out, in the hard year included.

#### Skills and tools ##

Practised at well drawing, churning butter, and fence mending, with barn raising besides. All of it learned on the holdings of this valley, from people who had it from theirs.
