Drew the small-beer and traded Horseman tales with travelers at the roadside inn; the dairy never once came up short at market.

##### Quackenbush's hop-yard (Sleepy Hollow, NY)
**Ploughman** — 1791–1793

Followed the plough from thaw to frost over the stoniest fields in the glen; the errand was run and back before the moon was down.

**Hired Man** — 1791–1793

Drove the sleigh to the Old Dutch Church through every drift of a valley winter; the sleigh got the household to church through every drift of that winter.

#### Skills and tools ##

Practised at cider pressing, soap boiling, and haymaking, with sleigh driving, rye-and-Indian bread baking, candle dipping besides. All of it learned on the holdings of this valley, from people who had it from theirs.
